Why You Should Start Cycling To Work

Recent research by One4all Rewards revealed that around 2 in 5 of the Irish population cycles regularly, with 20% saying they do it for enjoyment and 17% saying it’s a great way to help them to keep fit. However, there’s still a long way to go as 61% of those surveyed revealed they never usually cycle, despite vast improvements in cycling infrastructure.

If you’re looking to change your commute, here are 5 reasons why you should choose a bike:

1. You’ll improve your physical fitness

Starting and ending your day with an active commute can improve your overall fitness. Mayo Clinic recommends adults get 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day – and cycling to work is a great way for you to reach your fitness goals. Regular exercise improves your cardiovascular and aerobic fitness, lowers blood pressure, boosts energy, builds muscle mass and strength, and improves coordination.

2. You’ll improve your mental health

Research has shown that an active commute can enhance your mood. Work is often a cause of stress for many people, so cycling to work is great for pedalling away the pressures of a hectic office environment and clearing your mind. Numerous studies have shown that daily exercise can reduce stress and anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression; recent research suggests that an inactive adult who exercises three times a week can reduce their chance of suffering from depression by 19%.

3. You’re helping the environment

Choosing a bike over your car is a great way for you to do your part in our battle to save the planet. Approximately 70% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from road transportation but a bike is a pollution-free mode of transport. Cycling 10km each way to work would save approximately 1500kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

4. You’ll save money

Swapping the car for a bike helps you save money; whether it be on fuel or fares for public transportation. So if you’re looking for ways to cut down on your spending, getting on your bike is the best economical option. Also, schemes like Bike to Work are great if you’re looking to invest in a good bike for your commute.

5. You’ll love the convenience

On a bike, gone are the days of sitting in traffic jams and spending 10 minutes looking for a parking space every morning. Cyclists don’t get delayed by unexpected road stoppages and the only parking you need is a space in the bike rack.
