With level 5 restrictions now in place, it is more important than ever to support Irish businesses and encourage others to do the same. There are some fantastic Irish businesses that are part of the One4all family. Over the next few weeks, we will be shining a spotlight on them and their great products, touching on topics like the importance of shopping Irish and tips on how local businesses can thrive during a pandemic. Here, we chatted to Alan Treacy, Owner of Outfield Sports, Co. Tipperary.
Tell us about your business
We are a specialist sports shop located in Co. Tipperary and we’ve been in business since 1995. We carry a wide range of products, ranging from general sports to running, tennis and fitness equipment. We stock Kilkenny, Waterford and Tipperary GAA gear too and we’ve moved our business online in the last 3 years.
Have your operating hours been affected with level 5 restrictions?
We are offering pay & collect to our local customers now. We can’t open under normal circumstances at the moment, but customers can still shop with us through click and collect. Customers outside of Tipperary can shop online with us via our website.
How has the pandemic affected your business?
Our business is quite dependent on people trying things on and handling equipment so it has been challenging, but we are hopeful for December that we can reopen the store to our customers. A positive outcome is that there has been a big push to support local; some local Gaelic clubs have come to us to supply their GAA gear which we are really appreciative of.
Why should people shop at your store?
If they’re looking for good quality sporting products – we’re a specialist sports shop and our knowledgeable staff provides great customer service and care to all of our customers.
Why is it so important to support Irish?
By doing so, you are supporting local jobs and clubs which in turn enables businesses to give employment to more people – It all comes full circle.
What advice would you give to other local businesses at the moment?
It’s so important to engage on social media and go out and get the business for your store. People are happy to support local businesses, but it’s important to make your business known and engage with customers in your area. We have gained business from our social media activity, which is a great, free way of promoting our business. Local businesses can sometimes fall short in search results online so it’s also important to look at ways to improve your online strategy. With support from LEO, I have learned a lot about optimising our online activity and tweaking the way we do things. The courses from LEO are excellent, and they are done remotely so I can attend without leaving the store!
You can support Outfield Sports by shopping on their online store.
