How To Manage Employees During Busy Work Periods

Every business will experience a busy period at some point during the year, whether it’s due to a seasonal rush or industry trend. During these busy rushes, it’s important that managers keep their workforce motivated to ensure that productivity expectations are met.

Here, we discuss 5 ways to keep your team happy and engaged during busy periods.

  1. Offer additional training: If you know your peak times, invest in additional training for your staff. Giving them the opportunity to learn new skills or enhance existing ones will help them manage their increased workload. It’s also a great way to boost engagement and productivity in the workplace as investing in them shows you care about their career path.
  2. Offer rewards for hard work: Increased workloads can often lead to shorter lunches and longer evenings as staff work harder to reach targets. If you’ve set targets that reflect the busier periods, ensure you are offering rewards to match. For example, spot prizes, bonuses and employee of the week are all strong perks that will keep your staff driven.
  3. Delegate effectively: Busy periods lead to longer task lists. It’s important that you delegate work effectively to ensure that no one is left with an unrealistic workload. You also need to check in with your staff regularly to make sure no one is becoming overwhelmed. If you see certain employees constantly staying late or looking increasingly stressed, step in and relieve the pressure by delegating tasks to other team members. You don’t want your team becoming fatigued and facing burn out and this will help prevent that.
  4. Make sure you have enough staff: The last thing you want during a busy period is to have your workforce extremely stretched. If your business can afford it, it can be helpful to take on temporary staff. Having extra numbers during the busy period can prevent your existing employees becoming stressed, overworked, and unhappy in their role.
  5. Promote balance: During busy periods, it’s important to encourage work-life balance. Staff are expected to work harder to reach higher demands, so you need to help them unwind at the end of the day. Overtime can be expected during peak season but make sure employees aren’t doing too much; starting early and finishing late every day isn’t good for physical and mental health. Also, encourage them to completely switch off when they leave the office – that means no checking their emails or taking work-related calls.
